| I'm serious! you really don't notice how much slang you speak. this is my major so I know a lil bit about it (though I should know a lot more =.=) taken from my worksheet from my dialectology class six characteristics of slang: 1. slang terms function as synonyms that replace neutral or conventional words in standard english 2. slang terms can be arranged along a continuum-some are more "slangy" than others 3. slang terms convey informality 4. slang terms are used according to specific situations and are dependent on these settings and situations 5. slang terms convey a special familiarity with a group that is often outside of the mainstream of the adult population. these terms are often used to convey group solidarity. they are often associated with specific age groups, ethnic cultures, or social classes. 6. slang terms usually have a short life and change more rapidly than other parts of vocabulary. its kind of long but yeah im bored and decided to educate you a bit. | |

| like the most simple example I can think of is "cool" though it seems so common nowadays and basically feels like a regular word in our vocabulary...in actuality it is a slang term and wasn't used when you go a certain amount of years back. (dunno the exact) | |

I would think that a word like "cool", as it's often used, is no longer slang, no? I wonder, when does a word loses its slang status...

wouldn't that constitute as the same thing? I don't know about "cool" though. There were, is, and will be a ton of synonyms for it as time goes on, but the whole idea of "cool" will always be around. The thing is that the term "cool" has never stopped being cool.

some people call me "Chink" all the time. It depends on how they say it. If they kid, I'll accept if not, I give them the "shut up" look. I've heard that. Some Asians use "chink" & "gook" like how black peeps use "nigga" as a term of endearment.
